The redesigned 2025 Ford Expedition brought a bunch of changes and updates on board, including neat features that add a little extra to the full-size SUV. Ford Authority has already put a few of these features in the spotlight, like the rear seat tablet holder and nifty Flex Powered Console. We’re taking a look at another feature today, shedding light on one of the redesigned SUV’s main selling points: the Ford Split Gate, as Ford Authority exclusively reported before the 2025 Expedition broke cover.
Ford Authority Executive Editor, Alex Luft, and his cohost “G” discuss the Split Gate in the video below.
The Ford Split Gate features a tailgate that makes up the lower quarter of the 2025 Ford Expedition rear end, which drops down for access to the SUV’s rear storage. The upper three-quarters of the liftgate, meanwhile, function as a typical SUV liftgate, lifting above the user’s head for greater access. Not only does this allow ease of access into the back of the Expedition, it “transforms the rear area into a table or stadium seating,” making it the ultimate feature for tailgating. The tailgate can support up to 500 pounds of weight too.
Aside from the Ford Split Gate, the 2025 Ford Expedition offers a host of other upgrades compared to the 2024 model year SUV it replaced. Standout goodies packed into its interior include a completely revamped cockpit with a new 24-inch display that serves as a large instrument cluster. This screen is paired with a 13.2-inch center screen for infotainment duties.
The 2025 Expedition one of the few models in The Blue Oval’s lineup to retain the factory keyless entry keypad, and it features a revamped exterior color lineup that now includes new hues like Space Silver Metallic. There are also a plethora of packages available, ranging from aesthetic touches to mechanical upgrade. That’s to say nothing of the all-new off-road-focused Tremor trim.
Production of the 2025 Expedition, which is handled at the Ford Kentucky Truck plant, is scheduled to kick off in early January 2025, as reported by Ford Authority. Pricing starts at $61,700, not including destination freight charges.

The old is new again. We had a split tailgate of sorts on our 1957 and 1963 Ford station wagons.
