2025 Ford Explorer Recalled Over Rear Camera Issue

Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2025 Ford Explorer models over an issue with the rearview camera.

The defect: in affected vehicles, the rearview camera image may fail when the vehicle speed reaches 10 miles-per-hour or greater. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

The hazards: the loss of the rearview camera image while in reverse can reduce the driver’s rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Components: rearview camera

Affected vehicles: select 2025 Ford Explorer models built at the Chicago Assembly Plant between May 30th, 2024, and August 8th, 2024.

Number of vehicles affected: 391

The fix: the accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge..

Owners should: wait for communications from Ford, which will begin on December 2nd, 2024. The Ford reference number for this recall is 24C34.

  1. Probably forgot that cars drive in reverse at high speeds. The camera typically turns off automatically at ~10 MPH going forward. Ran the same function in the code for Reverse, and forgot that positive vs negative direction makes a difference.
