In the U.S., the Ford Falcon debuted way back in the 1960 model year, and that model hung around for a decade before it disappeared from the country. However, the Ford Falcon lived on in some other global markets, including Australia – where it was reborn as a larger passenger car that remained in production through 2016. Aussies love their Falcons, understandably, which were offered in various high-performance guises over the years, and are still around in throes across that country. Sadly, however, one 1969 GT model recently met its untimely demise after being involved in a very sad crash.
According to 7 News, the owner of the 1969 Ford Falcon GT was participating in a “driver’s cup day outing” on public roads when he apparently lost control and crashed his vintage ride into a tree. The whole thing was caught on camera, though this apparently wasn’t just some normal accident – rather, witnesses stated that the driver was “hooning” his Falcon at around 8:30 pm on McCormick’s Rd in Carrum Downs when he lost control and spun around before smashing into the tree and causing catastrophic damage.
Making matters worse, the driver didn’t want to stick around and wait for police to arrive. Rather, he apparently tried to start the classic Ford Falcon and drive off, but a nearby resident sprung into action. “Bang, it was the worst noise you’ve ever heard,” the neighbor said. “I grabbed (the keys) out and he…couldn’t get going.” Regardless, the driver then attempted to flee on foot, leaving his passengers and car behind, but a group of residents managed to detain him.
Luckily, the passengers in the Falcon only suffered minor injuries, but the driver is now facing charges, not to mention the fact that they have to come to terms with destroying a vehicle that’s reportedly worth $250,000 and was just purchased five months ago after its previous owner spent several years restoring it.
