Each year, Insurify produces a list of the automotive models with the highest share of drivers that received a DUI (driving under the influence) charge. While the insurance company notes that this is a good way for us to be on the lookout for certain vehicles that may have impaired drivers behind the wheel, the truth is, it’s more of an interesting footnote than anything else. However, this year’s list contains a new model that we haven’t seen previously – the Ford Bronco.
The reborn Ford Bronco ranked tenth on this year’s list of the top 10 models with the most DUIs, thanks to a rate of 16.8 DUIs per 1,000 drivers. That isn’t anywhere near the top offender – the Buick Envista, which has a rate of 72.1 DUIs per 1,000 drivers, but it’s notable, regardless, as this means that nearly 17 out of every 1,000 Ford Bronco owners has a DUI on their record.
To come up with these rankings, Insurify’s data science team looked at the company’s database of more than 97 million insurance policies to determine which had the highest percentage of drivers with a DUI on their driving record. Back in 2022, the Ford Contour also made this particular list, too.
This data is certainly notable given the fact that roughly one-third (32 percent) of all traffic fatalities involve a drunk driver, accounting for one death every 39 minutes on U.S. roads, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Nearly one million Americans get a DUI citation every year, though that’s far less than the 24.1 million that admit they drove under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the past year. However, Ford is one company exploring ways to cut down on these numbers, recently publishing a patent for a drunk driver detection system.
