Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Thunderbird” with IMPI (Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial) in Mexico, Ford Authority has learned. The application was filed on September 18th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0119853236404. The filing carries the goods and services category of vehículos – aparatos de locomoción terrestre, aérea o acuática (excepto sus motores), or vehicles – land, air or water locomotion devices (except their engines).
The Ford Authority Take
Over the past few years, Ford has filed to trademark Thunderbird on numerous occasions, starting back in 2016, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and subsequently, in early 2021, once again with the USPTO. Now, Ford has once again filed to trademark Thunderbird – this time, in Mexico, albeit with the same type of goods and services description. For some time, this led many to believe that the Ford Thunderbird may be set to make a comeback following 11 prior generations – the last being discontinued following the 2005 model year, but nothing has come to fruition yet.
Regardless, as Ford Authority reported back in 2022, FoMoCo has been considering reviving the Ford Thunderbird nameplate on a performance-oriented vehicle – perhaps even a high-performance halo car this time around. The Ford Thunderbird project was reportedly being conceptualized as a far more performance-oriented vehicle than its direct predecessor, potentially as a two-seater designed not as a luxury coupe like previous generations, but rather, a roadster that will be more than capable on the track. Much like the original, first-generation T-Bird was a direct Corvette competitor, that would once again be the case in some regards.
However, some years have passed since then and nothing has come to fruition with the Thunderbird name, even as Ford continues to trademark it in various parts of the world. The automaker may still be considering a Thunderbird revival as something of a range-topping sports car sitting in the lineup above the Ford Mustang, though The Blue Oval has also been keen to expand the pony car lineup in a big way over the past year or so, too.

If for whatever reason Ford is planing to do the same atrocity they did with the Mach-e and the Capri…Don’t revive it!!!
The last Ford Thunderbirds needed better build quality. They were not the vehicles that Chevrolet Corvette continues to sell every year ! They must be a unique vehicle that inspires the continual sales of the Mustang !
