The Ford Cuautitlan Assembly plant in Mexico has celebrated its fair share of milestones over the years, many of them related to the Ford Mustang Mach-E that’s produced there at the moment. In fact, the Cuautitlan plant even builds that EV crossover’s drive unit now, making it more of a comprehensive, one-stop solution for the automaker. Now, the Ford Mustang Mach-E plant is celebrating yet another milestone, this time, one related to the rather long period of time that it’s been in operation.
The Ford Cuautitlan Assembly plant is celebrating 60 years of continuous operation, in fact. However, The Blue Oval has been operating in Mexico even longer after opening its first assembly plant in Mexico way back in 1925 – meaning that soon, Ford Mexico will be celebrating its centennial on top of this notable milestone. Cuautitlan isn’t quite as old, but it was inaugurated on November 4, 1964, meaning that we’re just a few days away from its official 60 year anniversary.
Over the past six decades, the Cuautitlan plant has built a number of different Blue Oval models including a large variety of F-Series trucks, the LTD, Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar, Ford Topaz, Ford Contour, and Mercury Mystique. Ford Mustang Mach-E production commenced at that facility in 2020 for the 2021 model year, and it’s currently the only product being built there now.
Mach-E production began following an extensive overhaul at the plant – 80 percent of Cuautitlan’s infrastructure had to be revamped, in fact – which included the addition of cutting-edge robotics and data analysis systems. However, that overhaul also helped Ford cut a whopping 70 percent in tooling costs thanks to the addition of virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D-printing systems, which helped offset much of the associated costs of retooling.
