Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a new type of EV charging station that may be used for future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on April 18th, 2023, published on October 24th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0351462.
The Ford Authority Take
Despite the fact that growth in EV demand hasn’t quite matched expectations as of late, automakers like Ford continue to see all-electric vehicles as the inevitable future. As such, The Blue Oval continues to file patents aimed at various ways we may one day charge our EVs, including ideas such as a hands-free EV charging system, a wireless charging system, and a system capable of using robots as charging assistants, to name jus a few. Now, this newly published Ford patent keeps that trend going with a fresh idea for a new EV charging system that may one day come to fruition.
In this new Ford patent, the automaker proposes using a rail system, mobile base structure, and a charging station with a battery to charge EVs. The base of this setup would be capable of moving along the rails by using a motor, and the battery could also move as needed, too. From there, a large mechanical arm/robot would be attached to the rail that’s also capable of moving from charger to charger, which is important because it would plug and unplug EVs at the beginning and conclusion of a charging session.
In the past, we’ve seen Ford explore various ways to make charging EVs easier and more of a hands-off task, and that’s also the case here. Presumably, one wouldn’t need to exit their vehicle to utilize this type of charging system, and perhaps they might even be able to just drive in like an automated car wash and let machinery handle the rest. This could wind up being rather convenient for EV owners if it indeed becomes a reality one day, too.

If there was something you just stick in the vehicle and its full in less than 3 minutes. Hmmmm
Ford should focus on fixing the current problems it has created and not making more future ones.
