Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a brightness management system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on October 18th, 2023, published on November 5th, 2024, and assigned serial number 12136397.
The Ford Authority Take
Mere days ago, Ford published a patent outlining an idea for an advanced interior lighting system, which would give users all sorts of ways to control ambient lighting inside of vehicles, which goes far beyond what’s currently possible. If that patent comes to fruition, users would be able to control all sorts of interior lighting settings – including ambient lighting – changing the color, brightness, and intensity in a variety of ways, even via predefined zones within a vehicle. Now, it’s been followed by this newly published patent for a brightness management system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept behind this patent is fairly simple, as it would control the brightness of a vehicle’s interior screens automatically based on sensed lighting conditions. Pretty much every new vehicle already does something similar, but in this case. the system would rely on sensors placed near the front of the vehicle to detect exterior lighting conditions. From there, it could adjust the brightness of screens inside the vehicle, and we aren’t just talking about infotainment or digital instrument clusters – but rather, even smartphones or tablets.
The concept here is that passengers in a vehicle could be using their smartphone with brightness settings turned up to the point where it could be distracting to the driver, and perhaps even dangerously so. This proposed system would even be able to determine where the smartphone or other mobile device is located in the vehicle in relation to the driver and make adjustments accordingly, too – something that seems a bit intrusive, but as is always the case with patents, there’s no guarantee that it will become a reality, either.
