Here’s The New Lectron Ford Fast Charging Adapter

As Ford Authority reported yesterday, The Blue Oval has partnered with Lectron to create a new adapter that will enable its EVs – which utilize the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) at the moment – to take advantage of the Tesla Supercharger network. This new adapter was co-developed between Ford and Lectron and comes at a time when the automaker’s previous adapter has been struggling to keep up with demand due to supply chain issues and a bad batch that now needs to be replaced. Now, we’re getting our first look at this new adapter.

Currently listed as out of stock on Ford’s website, the new Lectron fast charging adapter will retail for $200, at least, for those that didn’t secure their free unit before the deadline. It enables Ford EV owners to utilize Tesla’s Supercharger network and other North American Charging Standard (NACS) chargers and is OEM-certified after the automaker performed rigorous testing.

It is worth noting that the Lectron Ford Fast Charging Adapter is rated for up to 500 amps and 1,000 volts, but it can’t be used on every NACS charger – in fact, it isn’t compatible with Level 1 and 2 AC chargers, which includes Tesla Destination units and home chargers that utilize the NACS format. Otherwise, the adapter functions precisely the same as the previous unit, which will continue to be shipped to customers awaiting that particular part. It attaches to the Tesla Supercharger cord, and one then simply plugs it in to their CCS port – after which the Plug & Charge feature takes over and automatically starts the charging process. When charging is complete, owners simply remove the adapter and are free to go on about their business.

It is worth noting that the creation of the new Lectron Ford Fast Charging Adapter isn’t related to the aforementioned bad batch of older adapters, which the automaker asked owners to stop using and is in the process of replacing. Regardless, it will help Ford get adapters in the hands of customers more quickly, which is good news for those that have been waiting to take delivery of one.
