Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Lightning” with IMPI (Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial) in Mexico, Ford Authority has learned. The application was filed on October 16th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0119853252040. The filing carries the goods and services category of “vehículos de motor, a saber, automóviles, camionetas, vehículos eléctricos, vehículos utilitarios deportivos, vehículos todoterreno, y sus partes estructurales,” or, “motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, light trucks, electric vehicles, sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, and structural parts thereof.”
The Ford Authority Take
Just a few weeks after The Blue Oval filed to trademark “Thunderbird” in Mexico, it has now done precisely the same thing with its “Lightning” moniker, which could signal that it plans to sell the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning in that country at some point in the future. Such a move would make sense for a number of reasons, but for starters, the automaker already offers the ICE Ford F-150 in Mexico and has for years – though in that market, it’s known as the Lobo, which is Spanish slang for “wolf,” rather than the F-150 that customers from other parts of the world know it as.
The Ford F-150 Lightning is also sold in a couple of other global markets currently, so adding another one to that list wouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Those include Switzerland, as that European country began selling the F-150 Lightning back in November 2023. There, the EV pickup is offered in limited quantities at an elevated price tag of 127,000 Swiss francs, or $139,735 USD. The Ford F-150 Lightning is also already on sale in Norway, where the first Lariat Launch Edition models began arriving this past February.
Additionally, the F-150 Lightning is also on sale in Australia, currently, but not via The Blue Oval itself – rather, it’s imported and converted to right-hand drive by Advanced Manufacturing Queensland, and then distributed by AusEV. Regardless, those gray market pickups have proven to be quite popular in spite of the fact that the standard range model starts out at $224,990 AUD ($144,792 USD) minus on-road costs, while the Lariat comes in at $254,990 AUD ($164,098 USD).
