Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an interior vehicle module similar to the one present in the European Ford Explorer EV that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 10th, 2022, published on November 19th, 2024, and assigned serial number 12145512.
The Ford Authority Take
The all-new Ford Explorer EV debuted for the European market back in March 2023, followed by its MEB platform mate, the Ford Capri – and now, both of those models are shipping to customers, though weak demand for both recently prompted The Blue Oval to scale back production. Neither is slated to be sold in the U.S., but this newly published patent makes it seem as if one feature present in the Explorer EV could be destined for future Ford models sold in that country, regardless – what the automaker calls “Sync Move,” which utilizes a 15-inch touchscreen that can move up and down, revealing a “private locker” behind it where owners can stash valuable items.
Though Ford doesn’t specifically reference the Explorer EV or that particular screen in this patent, the concept is pretty similar. Here, we have an idea for vehicle display modules with adjustable mechanisms that can move one or even multiple screens around as needed. Much like we’ve seen in some other newer vehicles, users could change the angle of the screen – which would prove useful in terms of not only making it more visible and reducing glare, but also, gaining access to hidden storage space behind the screen.
If this type of moving screen does in fact come to fruition, it wouldn’t be the first Ford feature previewed by a production model. In fact, as Ford Authority reported this past March, The Blue Oval also published two patents in the U.S. outlining an idea for a tray assembly and a steering wheel with a built-in tray that are pretty similar to what’s present in the European Transit Custom.
