Supercars Ford team Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) looked to be a legitimate championship threat before the races at Gold Coast on October 26th and 27th, 2024. Chaz Mostert, driver of the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT, was steadily cutting into the points lead held by Chevy team Triple Eight until disaster struck, forcing Mostert into the pits for several unscheduled stops with 20 laps to go. The trouble mathematically eliminated Mostert from the championship with just one race left this season, and Tripe Eight team boss admits that his misfortune played right into the Chevy team’s hands.
According to a report from Supercars.com, if Mostert had finished on the podium – which looked to be the case before mechanical issues took his race car out – he would have headed to Adelaide within 200 points of Will Brown, current points leader. However, he fell short, and now there’s no possible way he can close the gap, even if he gains the maximum amount of possible points at Adelaide.
Triple eight team boss Jamie Whincup said that Mostert’s issues allowed Triple Eight to breathe a little bit. With Mostert out of contention, one of the Chevy organization’s two drivers is guaranteed to win the championship. Either Brown’s No. 87 Chevy Camaro or Broc Feeney’s No. 88 Camaro will be the 2024 champion.
“It is a great feeling and we will celebrate that on Sunday in Adelaide,” Whincup said. “Both drivers did an incredible job. It’s highly publicized how hard it is out there and the great job the guys in the arena are doing, giving blood week in, week out, battling it out. But there’s a lot going on in team land as well, so we had a big scrap with WAU this weekend.”
He added, “The engine thing was very unfortunate for [WAU] yesterday and then thankfully [for us], unfortunately for them, they made an error today which allowed us to gather a heap of points and set up our year.”
