The Ford Explorer EV on sale in Europe was a much-hyped model prior to its launch, with The Blue Oval even tabbing travel influencer Lexie Alford to take one on a world-wide road trip – during which she became the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an electric vehicle. However, consumer demand for the Explorer EV has proven to be a bit weak, prompting The Blue Oval to scale back production, trim its European workforce, and ask for substantial government incentives. Now, FoMoCo has launched a pretty unique ad campaign for the Ford Explorer EV as it works to ramp up sales of that crossover.
The new Ford Explorer EV ad campaign consists of a three-part documentary series dubbed Charge Around the Globe that covers Alford’s trip around the planet in that model, which was filmed by a crew that followed her on the trip. The series covers the many challenges Ford and Alford faced on that journey, ranging from all kinds of terrain to a lack of charging infrastructure in certain parts of the world, and includes historic footage of the inspiration for this trip – Aloha Wanderwell’s quest to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe in the 1920s behind the wheel of a Ford Model T.
All three 50-minute episodes of Charge Around the Globe are now available to watch on Prime Video for subscribers to that service, as well as on YouTube, via the official channel of the same name, which can be found here.
“I was the youngest person to travel to every country around the world, but this was one of the most challenging things I’ve done,” Alford said. “Whilst I’ve proved that it is possible to travel around the globe on electric power alone, it certainly wasn’t easy and it showed just how different the charging infrastructure is on different continents. I’m so happy to share the adventure on Amazon Prime, and hope that this helps us to understand how we need to improve to truly enable zero emission driving.”
