Hoonigan has blessed us with a bevy of unique drag strip matchups between totally different vehicles via its long-running This vs That series, but more recently, it also introduced some off-road racing into that mix, too. These types of races – which take place on dirt tracks with plenty of jumps thrown in for good measure – are equally entertaining, one could argue, and have also featured a host of Blue Oval models thus far. That’s certainly the case with this new video, which features a modified Ford F-150 Raptor racing an even more heavily-modified Ford Ranger Edge.
The Ranger Edge seen here is owned by off-road racer Zach Conner, and it actually started life as a 2000 model year pickup – though not much remains from that. Rather, this wild machine now utilizes totally custom bodywork, touts 18 inches of front wheel travel and 30 inches out back thanks to a custom suspension, and churns out around 570 horsepower from its turbocharged LS3-based powerplant while rolling on 37-inch Nitto tires.
In the other lane, we have a 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor that’s powered by a twin turbocharged, 1,250 horsepower Coyote V8 (at the wheels!) driving 39-inch tires via a bespoke long-travel suspension setup as well. Regardless, as one might imagine, the Ford F-150 Raptor has some trouble finding traction in the dirt at the start of the first 1,000-foot race, leading to an easy victory for the Ranger.
Thus, for the second race, the Raptor is allowed to use four-wheel drive, and that makes all the difference in the world, as it claims a narrow victory at the end. Regardless, the desert racing Ranger winds up taking an easy victory – and overall win – in round three, which isn’t terribly surprising. After all, it’s a purpose-built race truck, while the Ford F-150 Raptor is more of a road-going rig, even if it is more powerful by a long shot.
