The Ford Explorer is largely credited with ushering in the current generation of more road-friendly crossovers and SUVs, which are largely focused on hauling families and gear in comfort rather than being more truck-like and off-road capable like they were before. Thus, perhaps it isn’t completely surprising that first-generation Ford Explorer models are quickly becoming coveted collectibles, with many low-mile, well-kept examples surfacing for sale as of late. Now, that list includes this well preserved 1991 Ford Explorer, too.
This 1991 Ford Explorer XLT is up for auction at Bring a Trailer with 95k miles on the clock, and the listing notes that the odometer may have rolled over, too – meaning that this is not some low-mile gem. However, it is in remarkably good condition if it does in fact have nearly 200k on the clock, and it’s also equipped with some desirable features – chiefly, a five-speed manual transmission, which isn’t hugely common in Explorers from this generation.
That gearbox is mated to the naturally-aspirated Ford 4.0L V6, which in this guise was factory-rated to generate 155 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. Otherwise, this one-owner machine sports a rather nice Colonial White paint job with just a few flaws, along with a gray cloth interior and amenities such as cruise control, power windows and locks, a cassette stereo, and air conditioning.
Of course, this 1991 Ford Explorer joins a bevy of them that we’ve spotted at various collector car auctions in recent months, and that list is rather diverse as well. It includes a 1992 Jurassic Park tribute, in fact, as well as a 1993 Eddie Bauer model with 56k miles, a 1994 Sport with 65k miles, and a 1994 XLT with 58k miles, to name just a few.
