The turbocharged 1.0L I3 Ford EcoBoost engine – which can be found under the hood of select Ford EcoSport, Ford Fiesta, and Ford Focus models – has been put under a microscope as of late. The engine could present with critical oil pump issues, which could result in a sudden loss of oil pressure and, in extreme cases, complete engine failure. This prompted an NHTSA investigation, a recall, and more recently, a lawsuit. However, that lawsuit has now been dismissed and will not proceed.
According to a report from Car Complaints, the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed the Ford EcoBoost lawsuit. The class action lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. The plaintiffs are Veronica Maldonado, John Wright, Margaret Vasquez, Tracey Drotos, Marlon Bolton, Bea Tyree, Lane Tyree, Scott Martin, Jenny Ptaszek, Gina Bilotta, and are represented by Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith, Berger Montague PC, and Capstone Law APC.
Initially, the lawsuit alleged that Ford Motor Company was aware of the Ford EcoBoost engine issues prior to the recall, given that the automaker had issued technical service bulletins and special service messages (SSMs) to dealers regarding the engines. Said SSMs were issued to address issues with EcoBoost oil pump tensioners and instructed dealers to replace the engine assemblies in affected units.
Ford argued that the lawsuit should be dismissed due to the recall, and alleged that the plaintiffs hadn’t taken advantage of repair options available to them in the interim.
In its recall issued over this particular problem, Ford admitted that the faulty oil pump drive tensioner arm “may fracture or separate, causing a loss of vehicle power and power braking assist, increasing the risk of a crash.” However, the automaker doesn’t expect to receive replacement parts to fix affected Ford EcoBoost engines until the 2025 calendar year, leaving some owners in a lurch. Ford doesn’t recommend driving vehicles with the 1.0L Ford EcoBoost engine until they can be repaired, after all.

I have a 2018 Ford Focus. It has had 5 engines the interim fix has not helped me. Total I have been without my car or rental for more than 380 days. I want my money back. I need reliable transportation. I want all my money BACK!
I’ve had 5 engine replacements for my 2018 Ford Focus! This ordeal is a hardship for the customer and so unfair!!! I want all my money back.
This is unfair to the customer. I have had 5 engine replacements. My car is undrivable and no loan cars available.
So Ford doesn’t recommend driving until unit is repaired however Ford is not providing repair parts until a yet to be named future date. So who is responsible should your Ecco Sport engine seize as is likely to happen and you end up crashing?
Exactly why my last few purchases were NOT fords.
This is the worst situation ford can possibly be responsible for putting me in. Im currently financing a 2018 ford focus 1.0 ecoboost. I can barely afford the payments, but I needed a reliable car to get me to work. If this car fails, which I’ve already had many issues, how am I supposed to survive? No car, no work, no car payments. Ford should be held responsible for putting out cars with a faulty design. They can afford to replace my car with a reliable one, I can’t.
Also, I think there should be a thorough review of the transmission as well. They are using faulty tcm components from previous recalls as well.
I have just bought one 17 plate
Does ford want it back or are they going to fix
It’s dreadful i spent £20000 with finance getting my partner her dream car it’s the 2015 model. Had the same problems oil pump engine blow. For didn’t recall our car. We spent more money fixing. We don’t have money at all . Work very hard and only just get bye each month. But ford get rich . And no you didn’t recall my car at all. If we can get rid off it at some point always had fords but don’t think we will go back not . You cost us loads because off you mistakes and you couldn’t fix it . For unbelievable.
Don’t buy Ecoboost simple as
So Ford admit to a major problem by telling you not to drive it until it’s repaired, but deny there’s a problem with the ecoboost engines so as not to accept any liability! Not a good marketing strategy by Ford in any shape or form. The ecoboost problems don’t just stop at the wetbelt design, there’s also the bigger 1.5lt and upwards with cracked cylinder liners and major cooling system problems. The whole ecoboost engine family needs scrapping and owners compensating.
I purchased the 2018 Ford Focus from Mall of Georgia Ford at 55,000 miles for my son. I have had nothing but problems with this car. BBB, AutoLine, Georgia Attorney General Office, the General Manager at Mall of Georgia Ford, Ford Customer Service: No one has completely repaired the car or given me an opportunity to get another one. The car has been in the Ford Motor auto repair shop 4 times; it has had 4 motor replacements and 3 head gaskets. Our Ford Focus has been out of commission for more than 300 days; presently it is undrivable, and the recall part is not due to arrive until June 2025.
I want my money back: $15,000. I have cried a lot over this car. I don’t have a car to drive or a rental car. My son had to leave a job because he did not have reliable transportation. He has been broke down on a major highway twice. I want my money back.
