Ford has a rich history in motorsports, in general, having won its fair share of races in everything from drag racing to NASCAR to endurance events such as the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. The automaker has also paced its fair share of racing events – such as the Indianapolis 500 – even offering a variety of Indy 500 pace car replicas to the public along the way. However, fans of that iconic event will likely be rather interested in this historic 1966 Lola T90 Ford Indy Car that was driven by a literal racing legend many years ago.
This 1966 Lola T90 Ford Indy Car is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction next month, where it’s estimated to rake in somewhere between $1-$1.5 million, and there are quite a few good reasons why that’s the case. For starters, it was driven by three-time Formula 1 champion Jackie Stewart in the 1966 Indianapolis 500, where he finished sixth, and that also happened to be the same year Stewart won rookie of the year honors. After that, Stewart also scored a pole and a win in the 1966 Fuji 200 in Japan in the very same Ford Indy Car.
As for the car itself, this Indy racer is chassis number SL90/2 and one of just three Lola T90s built in total. It’s powered by a Ford 256 cubic-inch DOHC, four-cam, fuel injected V8, mated to an in-and-out transmission. It comes complete with a full racing history, USAC tech sheets, an additional nose and front section, and loads of other documentation. Given the fact that it’s eligible for Vintage Indy and SVRA vintage racing events, the new owner can also take it out and relive the glory days too, if they wish.
Finishing sixth at the legendary Indy 500 isn’t something that rookies typically do, particularly since this 1966 Lola T90 Ford Indy Car also belonged to the then-new John Mecom Racing Team, too, Even more impressively, Stewart led the race for a grand total 40 laps until an oil scavenger pump failed with only 10 laps to go. Regardless, Stewart obviously went on to enjoy tremendous success, and now, this slice of history is poised to conjure up plenty of interest when it crosses the auction block in a few weeks.
