Saleen is one of the more established names in the Ford Mustang tuner world, having originated during the Fox Body era, though it continues to make and sell parts, accessories, and entire turnkey pony cars to this day. Many Blue Oval fans have a soft spot for the earlier Ford Mustang Saleen models, however, which are quite attractive to look at and chock full of performance upgrades, to boot. Given their rarity, we don’t see these models surface for sale that often, making this 1988 Ford Mustang Saleen a rather enticing potential purchase.
Up for auction at Bring a Trailer, this 1988 Ford Mustang Saleen is number 700 of 709 modified by the tuner in this particular model year, a fact that’s proudly displayed on its bumper cover decal. The Oxford White hatchback looks to be in great shape on the outside, and is equipped with all of the requisite Fox Body Saleen upgrades such as a unique rear wing, valance, and side skirts, a “Saleen” windshield banner, bumper covers, and 16-inch white-spoked Saleen/American Racing wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich G-Force Super Sport A/S tires.
Inside the cabin, one will find a pair of Flo-Fit front bucket seats finished in Grey Titanium cloth with red piping, Saleen Mustang lettering on the floor mats and door panels, an Alpine head unit, a Bazooka EL bass tube, a center console plaque, a three-spoke MOMO steering wheel, and Saleen-branded instrumentation. Power comes from the 5.0L high-output V8 that was factory rated to generate 225 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while underneath, one will find a Racecraft suspension with performance-tuned springs, Monroe Formula GP shocks, and four-wheel SVO-type disc brakes.
This 70k-mile 1988 Ford Mustang Saleen isn’t something that we stumble across very often on the auction block, but there have been a couple of others listed for sale over the past couple of years. That includes a pristine one-of-161 1989 Mustang Saleen SSC, as well as a 1987 Mustang Saleen prototype.
