The Ford Mustang Mach-E has historically performed extremely well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) safety tests, even as that agency has worked to update those same tests. This was true back in 2022, when the Mach-E earned a “good” rating from the IIHS in its updated side crash test, and a year later, the crossover was one of just four such models to achieve a “good” rating on its updated moderate front overlap crash test. Now, those strong performances continue following the release of the latest list of IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ Award winners.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E has been bestowed with a Top Safety Pick+ Award, the highest honor from IIHS in its crash testing, joining nine other models this time around – the Infiniti QX60, Mazda CX-70, Mazda CX-70 PHEV, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Rivian R1S, Subaru Forester, Toyota Tundra crew cab, and Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. Meanwhile, nine models earned a Top Safety Pick Award – the Audi Q8, the Ford F-150 SuperCrew and Ford F-150 SuperCab, Infiniti QX80, Kia K4, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Corolla sedan, and Toyota Crown Signia.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E brought home this prestigious award after receiving “good” scores in the categories of small overlap front, moderate overlap front, updated side, headlights, and front crash protection for pedestrians, plus an “acceptable” rating for latch ease of use. The Mach-E is joined by not only the F-150, but also, the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus and Ford Explorer, which previously received Top Safety Pick+ awards as well.
The IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards recognize vehicles that achieve strong performances in the organization’s crashworthiness and crash-avoidance evaluations. In order to achieve a Top Safety Pick Award, a vehicle must receive good ratings in the small overlap front test and updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the original moderate front test, as well as acceptable or good ratings in pedestrian front crash prevention and acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. Vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate front test to receive a Top Safety Pick+ award.
“Our rigorous internal safety evaluations ensure Ford and Lincoln products meet the highest standards,” said Bob Holycross, Ford’s chief sustainability, environment and safety officer. “Across our portfolio, we are dedicated to designing safe experiences for our customers and all road users. We are proud of these achievements and remain committed to continuous improvement.”
