Ford Bronco Sport Misses Out On 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards

Shortly after it debuted for the 2021 model year, the Ford Bronco Sport was awarded a prestigious Top Safety Pick+ Award, the highest such honor given out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Ford Bronco Sport achieved this by earning a “good” rating in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests, the best possible rating in each category. The six IIHS crashworthiness tests include driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. However, in the 2024 version of its Top Safety Pick Awards, the Ford Bronco Sport was surprisingly absent.

The 2024 Ford Bronco Sport did manage to achieve “good” ratings in the categories of small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and headlights, but flunked its seat belt reminder test with a “poor” rating, and was also rated “moderate” in terms of latch ease of use. In order to achieve a Top Safety Pick Award, a vehicle must receive good ratings in the small overlap front test and updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the original moderate front test, as well as acceptable or good ratings in pedestrian front crash prevention and acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. Vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate front test to receive a Top Safety Pick+ award.

As Ford Authority recently reported, a few Blue Oval models did walk away with IIHS honors this time around – the Ford Mustang Mach-E received a Top Safety Pick+ Award, joining nine other vehicles  – the Infiniti QX60, Mazda CX-70, Mazda CX-70 PHEV, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Rivian R1S, Subaru Forester, Toyota Tundra crew cab, and Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid. Meanwhile, nine models earned a Top Safety Pick Award – the Audi Q8, the Ford F-150 SuperCrew and SuperCab, Infiniti QX80, Kia K4, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Corolla sedan, and Toyota Crown Signia.

“Our rigorous internal safety evaluations ensure Ford and Lincoln products meet the highest standards,” said Bob Holycross, Ford’s chief sustainability, environment and safety officer. “Across our portfolio, we are dedicated to designing safe experiences for our customers and all road users. We are proud of these achievements and remain committed to continuous improvement.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
