The Ford Authority Take

Ford E-Series sales were in the red year-over-year and during the first nine months of the 2024 calendar year. Even so, combining sales of the E-Series with those of the Ford Transit continues to give The Blue Oval nearly half of all sales volume, with crosstown rival GM coming in second with the Chevy Express and GMC Savana. That relegates Ford’s other primary competitor, the Ram ProMaster, to a close third.

Though the Express and Savana were thought to be discontinued after the 2025 model year, GM previously entertained plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However it seems to have canceled any next-generation vans, instead moving the all-electric BrightDrop vans under the Chevy brand.

About Ford E-Series

Formerly called the Econoline van, the Ford E-Series was eventually replaced by the Transit and is now only sold as a chassis cab or stripped chassis configuration to underpin campers, ambulances, small buses, and other light-duty vehicles.

The current model remains largely unchanged, save for a few major updates such as the debut of the chassis cab variant five years ago.

The 2024 model year sees only minor changes. This includes the deletion of the Economy tune in favor of the naturally-aspirated Ford 7.3L V8 Godzilla engine. Moving forward, the E-Series will offer just one drivetrain calibration, with an output of 325 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, as its flex fuel capability option has also been eliminated from the lineup.

Ford E-series production will continue at the Ford Ohio Assembly plant until at least until April 2028, according to the deal that the United Auto Workers (UAW) secured with Ford.

  1. i owned both 7 Econolines….and a new then 2015 Transit mid roof 148 wheelbase 3.7 engine….the Transit is one of most overated problemic and gave more problems than all 7 Econolines…The hardest to work one….try installing rear brake rotors, you have to remove both axles…a costy and time consuming job…try chaining automatic transmission filter…you have to take lose front carriage sub frame….Transit Van has no frame..its not hard get stuck in one…notice under rear axle the stablizer bars…will hit the dirt because they low to ground and get stuck easily….Notice the gas cap…right at drivers entrance…a little overfill of gas…and suddenly the cab is full of gasoline oder….to change battery…its under the drivers seat,,a pill to change….also air filter takes three times hard to change than Econoline…as for fuel miliage ,,,Loaded there about the same…My Econlines had v8…plenty of torgue 13 mph in town loaded…the V6..is the same loaded on mpg…but has no torgue and constant annoying up and down shifting…The main thing i like about the Transit is the mid and high roof options….other than that it…I pay extra to get a old style Econoline van…and mabe they offer a way to raise the roof….and it be perfect….
