The Ford Equator officially debuted in China back in March 2021 as an all-new, upscale, three-row crossover for that market produced by the passenger vehicle joint venture dubbed Jiangling Ford Motor Technology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., but The Blue Oval decided to give it a refresh recently, which included the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain option. The updated Ford Equator PHEV just debuted roughly one month ago, and now, it has officially launched in China.
Along with the five-seat Ford Equator Sport PHEV, the refreshed seven-seat Ford Equator PHEV was on display at the Guangzhou Auto Show recently, during which the automaker revealed all of its pertinent specs and pricing information. The revised Ford Equator PHEV starts out at RMB 206,800-238,800 ($28,519 to $32,932 USD), and is a bit longer than the Equator Sport to accommodate two additional passengers. Otherwise, it shares a lot in common with the sportier version, and both plug-in hybrids utilize the same exact powertrain, too.
That powertrain combines a traditional turbocharged 1.5L gas engine with an 18.4 kWh battery pack from CATL to deliver an all-electric driving range of 110 kilometers (68 miles) and a combined output of 215 horsepower. According to Ford, the plug-in hybrid battery can go from a 30-80 percent state of charge in around 14 minutes, and with a full tank of gas and a 100 percent charge, total range comes in at 1,205 kilometers (749 miles). That powertrain is mated to a dual-clutch hybrid transmission, which helps propel the crossover from 0-62 mph in around 7.7 seconds.
The Ford Equator PHEV looks a bit different than the Equator Sport on the outside as well, with slim LED headlights, an octagonal shield grille, revised front and rear fascias, and the updated model is the first in China to wear an “Equator” badge on its hood, plus an illuminated Equator badge out back. The new crystalline L-shaped headlights and full-width taillights present owners with welcome animations, while new 20-inch wheels sport aerodynamic covers, and customers can opt for a bevy of accessories such as a roof rack.
