Ford EV Wireless Charger Patent Suggests Tech Evolving

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a new type of wireless EV charger that may be used with future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on May 30th, 2023, published on December 5th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0399910.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a couple of patents outlining ideas for wireless chargers over the past year or so, one of which surfaced back in January 2023, followed by another in May of this year. We’ve also seen some pilot wireless EV charging tech surface in real-world applications, with a company called WiTricity debuting a Ford Mustang Mach-E with wireless charging technology at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show, after which it launched a Ford E-Transit wireless charging program in California earlier this year. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by presenting us with a more production-ready type of wireless EV charger.

Wireless charging is widely viewed as a great solution for EVs in the future, given the fact that vehicles would presumably be able to drive over chargers or even roads equipped with such things and replenish their batteries without any sort of physical connection – much the way a lot of smartphones and other personal electronics already do. In this case, Ford proposes another idea for a stationary wireless charger, which would be capable of communicating with vehicles for a seamless process.

Once a suitable charger is located and a vehicle’s compatibility is confirmed, the charger would be able to instruct the vehicle to lower itself if needed to establish a strong connection, after which a pair of tire blocks would extend toward the vehicle to hold it in place. Once secured, the charger’s pad would rise up to meet the battery pack and the charging process would begin. As we await the arrival of wireless charging highways for the masses, such technology seems destined to launch at some near point in the future – potentially looking a lot like what’s presented in this patent filing.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
