Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Ford Explorer sales kept the model in first place in the mainstream large three-row crossover segment among 14 models when ranked by sales volume.

The Explorer (see running Ford Explorer sales) maintained the lead as sales grew 25 percent to 41,996 deliveries, followed by the Honda Pilot in second with a 38 percent swell to 36,832 units. The next four entries were all close, each moving around 28K units. The Chevy Traverse (see running Chevy Traverse sales) jumped up to third place in spite of a 12 percent dip to 28,390 sales. The two models from the Hyundai Motor Group took fourth and fifth, respectively, with the Kia Telluride posting a two percent dip to 28,054 units just as Hyundai Palisade sales grew 44 percent to 28,045 units. The VW Atlas placed sixth with a 13 percent bump to 28,041 units. Meanwhile, the GMC Acadia (see running GMC Acadia sales), the Traverse’s corporate cousin and platform mate, placed 11th as sales fell six percent to 14,455 deliveries.

Notably missing near the top is the first-ever Toyota Grand Highlander, one of two entries from Toyota. In spite of previously taking the market by storm since its introduction just a year ago, sales evaporated this quarter due to a stop-sale order and production shutdown over the summer due to a recall involving a faulty driver’s side curtain airbag. Consequently, the Grand Highlander accounted for a mere 24 units during Q3 2024, falling to next-to-last just ahead of the discontinued Mazda CX-9. Meanwhile, the “regular” Toyota Highlander took eighth as sales fell five to 17,179 deliveries.

For informational and comparative purposes, we also provide sales figures for midsize crossovers that overlap with larger models like the Explorer – either in price, seating capacity, or both. Despite the fact that these models are physically smaller than the Explorer and its direct rivals, they are often cross-shopped. These overlapping vehicles include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the Kia Sorento and Mitsubishi Outlander
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating sold at a similar price point to the Explorer, including the Ford Edge (see running Ford Edge sales), Chevy Blazer (see running Chevy Blazer sales), Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan Murano
  • Nameplates that represent both two-row and three-row models, such as the new Jeep Grand Cherokee family

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, which includes the two-row Grand Cherokee and extended-length, three-row Grand Cherokee L, again outsold the Explorer, though the Ford outsold every other model here. However, it’s worth noting that Jeep’s two-row variant is an Edge rival, while the three-row one is an Explorer competitor.

The mainstream large three-row crossover segment expanded six percent to 286,557 units in Q3 2024, meaning Ford Explorer sales outperformed the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford Explorer sales increased a healthy 25 percent during Q3 2024, continuing to lead the segment. The model has now successfully navigated a refresh as the refreshed 2025 Ford Explorer has finally arrived at dealers and units are now shipping in earnest.

However, rivals GM (with the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia) and Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride) outpaced The Blue Oval in terms of combined sales volume. Additionally, Toyota is putting competitive pressure on the Explorer; this will have a bigger in future quarters as the stop-sales impacting the Grand Highlander is resolved.

About Ford Explorer

The 2025 Ford Explorer debuted earlier this year with new tech and a redesigned interior. The model range has been culled down and simplified to just Active, Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trim levels, each with a slightly different look on the outside thanks to a few minor styling updates. Gone are the Base, Limited, King Ranch, and Timberline trims. Instead, a first-ever Tremor off-road variant is on the way, with the SUV having recently been spotted testing for the first time.

For 2025, BlueCruise is available on the Explorer for the first time ever, available on Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trims. Additionally, the 2025 Explorer is the first Ford-branded vehicle to get the new Ford Digital Experience software, which was developed in conjunction with Google. It runs on a larger 13.2-inch infotainment screen, which is coupled with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Notably, a Ford Explorer Timberline revival is still happening, and was spotted testing for the first time.

Two powertrain choices are available on the 2025 Explorer, with the turbocharged 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost offered as standard on Active, Platinum, and ST-Line trims, and the twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 EcoBoost offered as standard on ST and optional on Platinum. Output remains the same, with the V6 producing 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission, and all four trims come standard with rear-wheel-drive, with all-wheel-drive available as an option.

With a hybrid powertrain option dropped for the 2024, it will still be absent for the 2025 Explorer, and here’s why.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Ford Explorer sales for Q3 2023, unless otherwise noted
  • In the United States, there were 76 selling days for Q3 2024 and 78 selling days for Q3 2023
  • For Explorer sales figures are comprised of the Ford Explorer and its police-duty variant, the Ford Police Interceptor Utility. In the past, Police Interceptor Utility sales were reported as a separate line item, but Ford is now folding its sales into the Explorer line item.
