Ford Mustang Build Challenge Reaches Climatic Conclusion: Video

The crew behind the Donut Media YouTube channel recently got their hands on a Ford Ranger that had seen better days and transformed it into an off-road beast. More recently, they took a spin in every generation of the Ford Bronco to see which one stood above the rest. This time, Donut has the Ford Mustang in the hot seat, capping off a long pony car build challenge with a series of drag races.

As part of its “Hi Low” series, Donut purchased two nearly identical units of the Ford Mustang GT and spent the better part of the year modding the heck out of them. The red Mustang is part of the “Hi Team,” which had no budget for modifications. The blue Mustang is the “Low Team,” and it had a limited budget to make it as fast as it could go. Both pony cars underwent extensive modifications, including new tires, suspension, and new intakes.

The Hi Team invested in a series of carbon fiber upgrades for their Ford Mustang, while the Low Team went the cheap route and gutted their Mustang’s interior. The Hi Team slapped a supercharger on theirs, and the Low Team answered with a nitrous kit. Overall, the red Mustang has $75,000 worth of mods to the blue Mustang’s $35,000 receipt.

The only thing left to do is to test the two Ford Mustang racers against each other in a test of straight-line speed. They’re turned out on the dragstrip, and it goes about as expected. “Hi Car” gets off the line first and doesn’t look back, beating “Low Car” by nearly a second in their first matchup.

After regrouping and making some minor tweaks, it’s time for the second race. This time, when Low Car hits the nitrous, it takes off and passes Hi Car like it was standing still. Fresh off the track, both head back to the garage to regroup.

The third and final race is pretty much a dead heat right to the line, but, ultimately, it’s the high-dollar Hi Car to the win – making it the victor in Donut‘s Ford Mustang build challenge.

  1. Reminds me of the GM Challenge Series that raced in Canada in the late 80s and 90s. When they raced at our ASA races we called them the Squeaky Tire Class.
