Ford Mustang GT Manual Ranked 11th On 2024 Made In America Index

Each year, a few entities put out lists of the most “American” vehicles one can buy, based on a variety of factors. That includes the Kogod School of Business, which just released its 2024 Made in America Auto Index. Each year, this list ranks new vehicles based on the percentage of its U.S. and Canadian content published by the National Highway and Transportation Administration, such as the source of its engine and transmission and the location of assembly, which it uses to calculate the vehicle’s total domestic content. As has been the case for some time now, the Ford Mustang GT made the cut this time around, too – in more ways than one.

The Ford Mustang GT ranked fourth on the 2024 Kogod School of Business Made in America Index thanks to its 80 percent domestic content rating, which includes the Premium trim, as well as models equipped with the 10-speed automatic. That tied the Ford Mustang GT with the Tesla Model S and X, ranking the pony car behind the Model 3 Performance (87.5 percent domestic content rating), the Model Y Long Range (85 percent), Model Y (85 percent), and Cybertruck (82.5 percent). However, Ford Mustang GT models equipped with the six-speed manual transmission finished a bit lower – in 11th place – with a 73 percent domestic content rating.

As Ford Authority previously reported, the Ford Mustang GT topped these same rankings back in 2021, while models equipped with the manual gearbox came in 22nd place in 2022, and the GT in general ranked seventh last year. Back in June, the Mustang GT ranked 31st on Cars.com’s American Made Index, too. In this year’s Kogod list, the V8-powered pony car was joined by the Lincoln Corsair, which ranked tenth with a 73.5 percent domestic content rating.

Overall, Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda all increased their U.S. content while GM, Ford, and Stellantis witnessed drops in domestic sourcing. Since the North American Free Trade Agreement was ratified in 1994, domestic auto manufacturers have been more likely to look to Mexican suppliers for many of their parts and components. This is particularly true of Ford, which builds the Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, and Maverick in Mexico.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. We have a 2021 Mustang Mach 1 that states it has 99% contents built in the US. That is with the 6 speed Tremac manual transmission. Tremac is headquartered in Mexico, but the transmissions are built in Novi, Michigan.
So, do the new Mustangs have more contents imported than in 2021? Or, are they just talking about the Mustang GT’s?
I still have the Content Label for our Mach 1, stating Country of Origin:
    Engine: U.S.
    Transmission: U.S.
