Ford Mustang GTD First American Car To Break Nürburgring Record

When the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD debuted over a year ago, The Blue Oval made it clear from the start that it had one big goal in mind for what’s supposed to be the most capable pony car ever built – to lap Germany’s iconic Nurburgring in less than seven minutes. The Ford Mustang GTD began testing at the Nurburgring this past July, though weather has thus far played a factor. Regardless, FoMoCo promised an update on this process just last week, and now, it has confirmed that the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has officially achieved its lofty goal.

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD at the Nurburgring.

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is officially the very first vehicle from an American brand to complete a lap at the Nurburgring in under seven minutes, as Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller piloted the pony car to a certified lap time of 6:57:685. That’s also the fifth-fastest time posted by a stock production sports car at the track, according to official records, and the GTD is just the sixth vehicle in that class to break the seven-minute barrier as well. The Ford Mustang GTD utilizes technology that bans it from GT3 racing, but managed to set this lap time in bone stock form, albeit with mandatory safety gear on board including a five-point harness and roll cage.

This monumental achievement comes after two years of testing and relentless work by a small team of engineers and designers, a process that Ford documented along the way. That story will now be told to the masses via a documentary dubbed The Road To The Ring, which one can watch below. The film features Ford CEO Jim Farley, Muller, Multimatic Chief Technical Officer Larry Holt, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall, and Mustang GTD Design Manager Anthony Colard, as well as other members of the Ford and Multimatic team. As Farley noted, this won’t be the final lap record attempt for the Ford Mustang GTD, either, as the automaker plans to give it another shot in 2025.

“The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars,” Farley said. “We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back.”

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. Sure Jimmy is doing cartwheels. But THIS is what they’re spending their time on? How about a new Edge and Escape, for starters?

    1. Don’t be silly and naive. Every OEM that matters (Toyota, Chevy, Honda, etc.) has a presence somewhere in motorsports and this is a genuinely impressive achievement. Edge is dead, deal with it.

  7. They can spend 300k building a new mustang but can’t be bothered to fix people’s cars that have had dozens of issues from day 1 of owning them. Nice. I’ve always loved mustangs but I regret owning a new one since it’s spent about 1/6th of its life in ford’s mechanic shops.

  8. I’m shocked Jim and the marketing guru’s at Ford didn’t name it Mustang Bronco or Mustang St-Line. No wonder this company is failing. Stale, unreliable vehicle lineup and this is where they invest their resources. Whew….
