In the United Kingdom, the light commercial vehicle and van sales charts have remained one of the most consistent such lists we’ve seen anywhere in the world, and for a very long time now. The Ford Transit Custom has remained atop those sales charts, and the Ford Transit has fallen right behind it in second place for quite some time now in what is a truly impressive run by any measure. Thus, it’s not terribly surprising to learn that this was also the case in November 2024, too.
According to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), the Ford Transit Custom continued its reign atop the light commercial vehicle sales charts in the UK by recording 4,335 sales last month. Right behind it, as usual, was the Ford Transit, which recorded 3,360 sales in November 2024, bringing its year-to-date total up to 29,798 units. The Ford Transit trails the Transit Connect by a large margin, but also holds onto second place by an equally large amount compared to the third-place Ford Ranger.
As for the overall LCV market in the UK, it recorded its fourth consecutive month of growth as registrations rose by 10.5 percent in November to 30,300 units – which was also the second-best November in history. Growth was largely universal among all segments, as small van sales rose by 128.6 percent to 999 units, medium vans by 9.8 percent to 4,999 units, large vans by 13.5 percent to 20,504 units, EV vans by 36.7 percent to 2,322 units, and 4x4s by 33.4 percent to 786 units, though pickup registrations fell by 20.4 percent to 3,012 units.
“The UK light commercial vehicle market continues to build back after a challenging start to the year, delivering the best performance since 2021 and the unleashing of pent-up demand,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “Britain’s appetite for zero emission vans continues to lag behind government ambition, however, and market share this year is heading in the wrong direction. With warnings over UK competitiveness now translating into tangible impacts, a fast-tracked review of market regulation is essential to ensure manufacturers can deliver the choice, growth and decarbonisation the nation needs.”
