Fox Body Ford Mustang Based Mitsuoka Dore Can Be Yours For $34K

There have been quite a few vehicles based on the Fox Body generation Ford Mustang to exist over the years, which isn’t terribly surprising given that model’s popularity and solid mechanical bits. That rather long list includes the likes of the Kelly Python – a rare machine sporting bodywork designed by Alvin A. Kelly, who leaned on inspiration from a concept designed by Eugene Bordinat in the 1960s – not to mention any number of other one-off creations. That list also includes the Mitsuoka Dore, another unique Fox Body Ford Mustang based machine that’s quite rare, too.

Thus, that makes this 1991 Mitsuoka Dore – which is currently up for sale on Craigslist in Yuma, Arizona for $34,000 – quite the special find. In fact, just 86 units of this interesting vehicle were built in total, and this is number 55 of that bunch. It started life as a 1991 Ford Mustang convertible, but was subsequently sent over to a company called Mitsuoka Motor Co. Ltd. in Toyama City, Japan, which transformed it into what it calls the Dore – a vehicle that looks like it could have been originally sold in the 1920s or prior.

Interestingly, Mitsuoka isn’t just some fly by night operation – it achieved official automaker status in Japan in 1996, joining the likes of Honda and Toyota, and developed a reputation for building luxurious, well-crafted vehicles with unique classic car-like designs, such as the Dore. The cars were hand-built in Toyama City by 45 craftspeople, which is what we can likely attribute their excellent built quality to.

Regardless, this particular example has around 23k miles on the clock, and is basically just a Fox Body Ford Mustang under its unique skin. That means it’s powered by Ford’s naturally-aspirated 5.0L H.O. V8 from that era, mated to an automatic transmission. It looks to be in great shape but reportedly needs a new convertible top, though the seller didn’t provide too much information otherwise – nor any photos of the interior or engine compartment. Regardless, if there’s someone out there that’s been looking to acquire a Dore, that opportunity certainly doesn’t come around very often.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
