Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a deployable device holder that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on June 15th, 2023, published on December 19th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0416842.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has published a few patents outlining different kinds of device holders in recent months, including one that could attach any number of electronic items such as tablets or smartphones to the rear portion of a headrest for rear seat passengers, as well as another designed to fit in a cupholder or other type of container insert. This concept recently came to life with the redesigned 2025 Ford Expedition, too, in the form of a clamp-like digital device holder that attaches to the rear of the front row headrests. Now, the automaker has published another, similar patent, this time for a deployable device holder that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
This particular concept revolves around the idea of placing a deployable device holder in the center console, which would open to reveal that piece when so desired. Users could pivot the device holder out of the console when they wish to use it to hold a device such as a tablet, which could then be moved around to provide a good viewing experience for those in the second row of seats.
Much like the concepts presented in the aforementioned patents, this idea is quite simple, and yet, potentially very useful. Typically, young children that ride in the back of SUVs or crossovers like to watch shows, movies, or videos on their devices – or play video games on them – while out on the road, and this idea would provide them with a more convenient way of doing precisely that. While some vehicles come with monitors already mounted in various places for this purpose, it makes sense to simply let users bring along their own devices, which typically already have those videos downloaded and ready to view.
