Ford began shipping out free adapters to its EV owners that enable them to use Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) superchargers with their Combined Charging Standard (CCS) equipped models months ago. After experiencing some problems with a bad batch of adapters, Ford also teamed up with Lectron to develop a rather robust alternative that’s also shipping out, too. Since then, several automakers have also provided EV customers with free NACS adapters – including Kia, but not General Motors – with the latest addition to that list being Hyundai.
Hyundai has announced that starting in Q1 2025, it will offer certain owners and lessees of select models a free NACS adapter through the MyHyundai owner portal, giving CCS-equipped vehicles access to the Tesla Supercharger network. This applies to owners of 2024 and prior Hyundai Kona Electric, Ioniq hatchback, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6 models, as well as 2025 Ioniq 5 N, Ioniq 6, and Kona Electric vehicles.
The brand will release more details pertaining to this adapter and how owners can claim theirs in 2025, along with pricing for the unit in the event that folks want to purchase one. Additionally, Hyundai also announced that Genesis vehicles will be included in the program, though details pertaining to the luxury brand won’t be revealed until early next year. Hyundai is in the process of transitioning its EVs to a native NACS port, as Ford Authority previously reported.
“To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners,” said Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president, product planning and mobility strategy, Hyundai Motor North America. “These adapters will make DC fast-charging more convenient for current owners. Plus, the NACS port on new models like the upcoming IONIQ 9[iii] along with improvements to our digital charging ecosystem, will further enhance the customer experience for future EV drivers. Our goal is to make the transition to electric seamless.”
