Jim Farley Says Ford Mustang GTD Will Return To Nürburgring

The Ford Mustang GTD debuted well over a year ago as the ultimate road-going pony car, one that offers up more performance than any model that has preceded it over the past 60 years. The Mustang GTD will also be sold in a variety of global markets aside from the U.S., including Mexico and Europe, though not in Australia, interestingly. Regardless, The Blue Oval achieved its goal of lapping the Nurburgring in Germany in under seven minutes recently, but that apparently won’t be the last time the Ford Mustang GTD appears there in an official capacity.

“The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars,” said Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO. “We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back.”

The Ford Mustang GTD team will indeed return to the Nurburgring at some point in 2025, aiming to best its already historic lap time of 6:57:685 with Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller behind the wheel – the fifth-fastest time posted by a stock production sports car at the track, according to official records, and the GTD is just the sixth vehicle in that class to break the seven-minute barrier as well.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see if Ford can indeed improve upon its impressive performance at the ‘Ring, and perhaps even come a bit closer to some of its rivals there, such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and its lap time of 6:49.328, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which did the same deed in 6:48.047, or any number of other European machines that have managed to set blazingly quick times at the iconic German circuit in recent years.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

    1. You do realize FoMoCo has different departments with different budgets, right? Maybe you can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, but others can.

  2. Not even the mighty Viper GTS ACR could break the seven second barrier at the ‘Ring, and now, I’m waiting to see what the C8 ZR-1 can do at the ‘Ring.

  3. I recall Larry Holt of Multimatic saying during a video walk around of the GTD, that he felt passing the AMG Black Series would be a real challenge, but catching the Porsche could be realistic. He may have been referring the non RS model though. Hey, if they are able to lop a few more seconds off of this time that would be fantastic! It was said that track conditions weren’t perfect either, so maybe it’s possible. This certainly in no way diminishes what they just accomplished though.
