Refreshed Ford F-150 Earns IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick Award

As Ford Authority reported just over a year ago, the 2023 Ford F-150 struggled a bit in updated Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash testing, earning a “good” rating in side impact testing, but also a “poor” rating in the moderate overlap front crash test. However, the popular pickup was treated to a mid-cycle action for the 2024 model year, and it seems as if the revised version received enough updates that the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 has now earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick Award as a result.

The 2024-2025 Ford F-150 was one of 19 vehicles to earn either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ Award from IIHS this time around, in both SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations. The Ford F-150 achieved this mark thanks to “good” ratings in the categories of small overlap front, updated side, front pedestrian crash protection, and seat belt reminder testing, albeit also a marginal rating in terms of child latch ease of use, as well as a poor rating in the updated moderate front overlap test – though a good rating in the old version of the latter test. The Ford F-150 is joined by the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus and Ford Explorer, which recently received Top Safety Pick+ awards.

The IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards recognize vehicles that achieve strong performances in the organization’s crashworthiness and crash-avoidance evaluations. In order to achieve a Top Safety Pick Award, a vehicle must receive good ratings in the small overlap front test and updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the original moderate front test, as well as acceptable or good ratings in pedestrian front crash prevention and acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. Vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate front test to receive a Top Safety Pick+ award.

“Our rigorous internal safety evaluations ensure Ford and Lincoln products meet the highest standards,” said Bob Holycross, Ford’s chief sustainability, environment and safety officer. “Across our portfolio, we are dedicated to designing safe experiences for our customers and all road users. We are proud of these achievements and remain committed to continuous improvement.”
