Each year, a few organizations put out lists of the most “American” vehicles one can buy, based on a variety of factors. That includes the Kogod School of Business, which just released its 2024 Made in America Auto Index. Each year, this list ranks new vehicles based on the percentage of its U.S. and Canadian content published by the National Highway and Transportation Administration, such as the source of its engine and transmission and the location of assembly, which it uses to calculate the vehicle’s total domestic content. As has been the case in the past, the Ford F-150 made the cut this time around – though results did vary based on powertrain.
This year, the Ford F-150 ranked 22nd on the Kogod School of Business Made in America Auto Index with a 66 percent domestic content rating, albeit only when equipped with the 2.7L V6 EcoBoost, 5.0L V8 Coyote, and supercharged 5.2L V8 powerplants, while pickups with the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost fell down a bit further, landing in 43rd place with a domestic content rating of 52 percent.
By comparison’s sake, the Ford F-150 ranked 17th on the 2023 Made In America Index due to its total domestic content of 65 percent, and that ranking applied to every engine in the pickup’s current lineup. The F-150 also came in 58th place on the 2024 Cars.com American Made Index, too. This year, the Ford F-150 was joined by the Ford Mustang GT, which ranked fourth on the Made in America Auto Index when equipped with the 10-speed automatic and in 11th place with the six-speed manual, as well as the Lincoln Corsair, as it landed in tenth place.
Overall, Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda all increased their U.S. content while GM, Ford, and Stellantis witnessed drops in domestic sourcing. Since the North American Free Trade Agreement was ratified in 1994, domestic auto manufacturers have been more likely to look to Mexican suppliers for many of their parts and components. This is particularly true of Ford, which builds the Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, and Maverick in Mexico.
