1965 Ford F-100 Sidelined By Five Dollar Part: Video

YouTuber John Ross from the channel WatchJRGo has owned, fixed up, and featured a host of Ford vehicles over the years, oftentimes models that he purchases for pennies on the dollar and then repairs for cheap. Generally, that process involves newer Blue Oval models that folks just don’t want to mess with and ultimately cut ties with, but in his latest video, we’re being treated to something a bit different. This time around, his grandfather’s 1965 Ford F-100 is experiencing a problem, but luckily, Ross traces it back to a rather affordable part.

The fuel pump on a 1965 Ford F-100.

When Ross planned on taking this vintage Ford F-100 to a cars and coffee meet recently, he discovered that it simply wouldn’t start, and when it eventually did, it only ran for a few minutes before dying again. This eliminates a few possibilities right off the bat, but still requires a bit of diagnosing to fully rectify. Ross previously swapped out the truck’s carburetor for a Holley Sniper EFI system, which enables him to do some research using that device – which reveals that there isn’t adequate fuel pressure – and after peeking under the truck, he sees that the area around the fuel pump is soaking wet.

There is spark, at least, but there’s no fuel reaching the engine at all, curiously enough. After doing a little bit of troubleshooting via the process of elimination, Ross discovers that the fuel filter is ultimately the culprit – somehow, it’s already clogged up, even though it is still pretty new. It’s a pretty strange development, as Ross notes, since he doesn’t ever see these filters fail in this manner, but on the bright side, it’s an easy and cheap problem to fix.

Regardless, this is just the latest Blue Oval vehicle that Ross has returned to the road after all hope was seemingly lost. Previously, he spent less than $300 getting a 2007 Ford Focus running and driving again, and also solved some problems with a 2015 Focus – though a wrecked 2017 Ford Fusion Energi proved to be more of a parts donor than something worth repairing.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  1. Better check for debris in the tank if the filters are plugging up in short periods of time, and blow out the lines also.

    1. Exactly what I was thinking. A 60 year old truck with a 60 year old gas tank has to be full of crud in the bottom of the tank. When I had these old beaters to get up and running (my older daughter had an old Mustang Ii she saved from a crusher once) the first thing I did new plugs, new fuel filter, new air filter, oil change and a can of Gumout spray to clean the carburetor. The old beast ran like a top for her for 2 years.
