1979 Ford Family Truckster Heading To 2025 Detroit Auto Show

Though the movie National Lampoon’s Vacation came out way back in 1983, the film remains a cult classic and one that many folks watch on a regular basis, years later. There’s a lot to like about that particular flick, of course, including plenty of memorable lines from Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, who ride around in a humorously modified machine – a 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire known as the “Family Truckster.” That rather exaggerated creation has since become a star on its own accord, and now, the 1979 Ford LTD Family Truckster will be making an appearance at a rather large car show, too.

That event is the 2025 Detroit Auto Show, according to Shifting Gears with Phoebe Wall Howard, where the Family Truckster will be joined by some other movie and TV-famous rides in either replica and original form – the 1985 Ferrari Modena Spyder California from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the 1998 Volkswagen Beetle from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, the Ferrari 308 G from Magnum PI, the 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am known as KITT from Knight Rider, and the 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ Sahara from Jurassic Park.

The 1979 Ford LTD Family Truckster has been replicated time and time again over the years, with many fan-created versions of that movie-famous ride appearing at auction, too (including the tribute build pictured here). The Blue Oval has previously paid tribute to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation with a special ad spot starring the Ford Mustang Mach-E and both Chase and D’Angelo recreating a famous scene from the movie, while Dick’s Sporting Goods got in on the action this past holiday season with a Ford Taurus wagon decked out like the movie-famous LTD, too.

The 2025 Detroit Auto Show kicks off on January 10th, 2025 and runs through January 20th, 2025, and as always, will feature a variety of new vehicles from multiple manufacturers – along with some likely surprise debuts, as has historically been the case.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
