1992 Ford Mustang SSP Police Car Up For Auction

The Ford Mustang SSP – or Special Service Package, as it’s otherwise known – was in production for many years as part of the pony car’s Fox Body generation, and made quite the impression on law enforcement over that timeframe. The Ford Mustang SSP also became well-known among the many folks that tried to evade one out on the highway, as it was rather good at high-speed pursuits, too. Every so often, we seen one of these beloved law enforcement-focused pony car surface for sale, and now, this 1992 model joins that list.

This 1992 Ford Mustang SSP is up for auction at Bring a Trailer after spending roughly a decade in service with the California Highway Patrol, after which it landed in private hands in 2003. The LX notchback still wears its black-and-white CHP livery, and is equipped with various police gear including antennas and A-pillar-mounted spotlights, plus 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped with General XP 2000 A4 tires.

While we don’t often see Ford Mustang SSP models surface for sale, we did come across a very nice ex-Florida 1992 police car a few years ago. Last August, a 1987 Ford Mustang SSP surfaced for sale at auction too, though it is a modified example with updates including – most notably – a 347 cubic-inch Roush V8 fitted with a Holley HP electronic fuel injection system and JBA headers that’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission with a Centerforce clutch.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  4. Labor Day 1992 I was driving a 1987 Grand National. It was early in the morning. I got on the onramp to head east on Interstate 90 in Bellevue WA. There was no traffic. I decided to floor it and feel that turbo kick in. I noticed the unmistakable look of a Foxbody Mustang heading east on I-90 as well. I knew it was a 5.0 GT by the fog lights.
I was happy to see it because, well we all know why.
Next thing I know it is on my tail, blue lights flashing. It was a Washington State Patrol undercover Mustang. I didn’t know how fast I was going because the speedo was digital and started flashing at 85mph. The trooper was very friendly and let me slide because I was respectful, had no record and the fact that there were no other cars on the road.
