1996 Ford Explorer Limited With 48K Miles Up For Auction

The Ford Explorer is a rather famous vehicle given the fact that it helped usher in the current world of more on-road focused SUVs, and in that regard, earlier examples are suddenly becoming, well, a bit collectible. In fact, we’ve seen quite a few first- and second-generation Ford Explorer SUVs surface for sale at collector car auctions as of late, many of which tout low miles on the clock and barely any flaws to consider. Now, that list includes this 1996 Ford Explorer Limited, which is up for grabs with 48k miles showing on the odometer.

This 1996 Ford Explorer is being auctioned off at Bring a Trailer after it reportedly spent 18 years of its life in Nantucket. Its Ivory Pearlescent Clearcoat Metallic paint looks to be in great shape, though the SUV did reportedly suffer minor damage up front back in 2020, though the front bumper has been repainted and looks no worse for wear now. Otherwise, the more luxurious model rolls on set of 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped with white wall Nexen tires, which look a bit out of place, covering a set of four-wheel disc brakes with ABS.

Inside the cabin, the Medium Prairie Tan leather-covered power-adjustable front seats do show some wear, as one would expect, but nothing too terribly alarming. There are quite a few amenities present as well, including a cassette stereo linked to a JBL sound system, cruise control, and automatic climate control. The headliner is sagging near the sunroof, however, so that is something the new owner will likely want to address. Otherwise, power comes from the Ford 5.0L V8, which in this guise was originally rated to produce 210 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, flowing to the rear or all four wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.

We’ve seen quite a few Ford Explorer models from this same generation surface for sale at auction over the past few months, as the SUV continues to provide popular with those seeking a lower-mile used utility vehicle. That list includes a 1999 Explorer XLT with 55k miles, a 2000 Limited with 62k miles, and a 2001 Eddie Bauer with 56k miles.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
