1999 Ford Explorer XLT With 55K Miles Up For Auction

The Ford Explorer has long been credited with ushering in the modern age of SUVs, models that are designed more for hauling the entire family in comfort rather than being used to do truck things like tow heavy loads. As such, the first- and second-generation Ford Explorer have started becoming more collectible, and we’ve seen numerous low-mile examples surface for sale at collector car auctions recently. That list is now expanding yet again, this time, to include a very nice 1999 Ford Explorer XLT that’s up for grabs with 55k miles on the clock.

This 1999 Ford Explorer is being auctioned off at Bring a Trailer right now, after it was sold new in Hawaii years ago. It was originally finished in Toreador Red Clearcoat Metallic but has been reprayed due to fading paint. The SUV features an array of exterior bits and pieces such as tinted windows, running boards, a BougeRV ski rack mounted on the factory cross bars, and the original 15-inch alloy wheels, which are now wrapped with 235/75 Ironman All Country AT2 tires.

Inside the cabin, one will find two-tone gray cloth upholstered seats with a little wear, plus amenities including cruise control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a CD stereo, rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks, air conditioning, and a cargo-area cover. Power comes from the naturally-aspirated Ford 4.0L SOHC V6, which was factory-rated to produce 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque and sends that power to the rear or all four wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.

This is just the latest interesting second-generation Ford Explorer we’ve seen hit the auction block as of late – a rather diverse list that includes a 1998 two-door Sport with a Ford Racing Performance Parts 363 cubic-inch V8 underhood, a 1998 Saleen XP8, a 2000 Limited with 62k miles, and a 2001 Eddie Bauer with 56k miles on the clock, to name just a few.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
