The refreshed 2025 Ram HD 2500 and 3500 were just unveiled earlier this week, ushering in a host of updates for the heavy-duty haulers and Ford Super Duty rivals. Along with the typical exterior styling updates and interior tweaks, the 2025 Ram HD also received a rather interesting one – a new version of the 6.7L I-6 Cummins High-Output Turbo Diesel engine, which is now mated to the TorqueFlite HD eight-speed transmission and a 3.42 rear-axle ratio versus the old model’s 4.10 gears and six-speed gearbox. Here’s how it stacks up to its competition.
GM Duramax V8 | Ford Power Stroke V8 | Ford H.O. Power Stroke V8 | Ram H.O. Cummins I6 | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Vehicles | Silverado HD, Sierra HD | F-Series Super Duty | F-Series Super Duty | Ram HD |
Engine Type | V8 | V8 | V8 | I6 |
Displacement | 6.6L | 6.7L | 6.7L | 6.7L |
Aspiration | Turbocharged | Turbocharged | Turbocharged | Turbocharged |
Fuel Type | Diesel | Diesel | Diesel | Diesel |
Horsepower (hp @ rpm) | 470 @ 2,800 | 475 @ 2,600 | 500 @ 2,600 | 430 @ 2,800 |
Torque (lb-ft @ rpm) | 975 @ 1,600 | 1,050 @ 1,600 | 1,200 @ 1,600 | 1,075 @ 1,800 |
The new Cummins is rated to produce 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque, numbers that fall a bit behind the Ford Super Duty’s turbocharged 6.7L V8 Power Stroke diesel in certain ways, which generates 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque in standard guise, or 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet in H.O. form. GM’s 6.6L V8 Duramax also bests the 2025 Ram HD diesel in terms of horsepower by churning out 470, but lags behind all of its rivals with “just” 975 pound-feet of torque.
As Ford Authority previously reported, the rear gear and transmission switch present in the 2025 Ram HD also hurts it in terms of max towing capacity – it’s now rated to tow up to 36,610 pounds, which is 480 fewer than the outgoing model. Meanwhile, the redesigned-for-2023 Ford Super Duty can tow up to 30,000 pounds conventionally, 35,000 pounds with a fifth wheel setup, and 40,000 pounds via a gooseneck. Ram didn’t specify what the new HD’s max rating requires, however.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Ford Super Duty is getting a few updates for the new model year, including the new Platinum Plus trim. In terms of gas engines, the 6.8L V8 is now standard equipment on the XL, XLT, and Lariat trims, while the 7.3L V8 is standard on the King Ranch and Platinum. Regardless, 2025 Ford F-250 Super Duty pricing hasn’t changed a lot, with the XL and XLT regular cab models now starting out $510 and $190 more than the 2024 model year, while the King Ranch is $30 pricier and the Platinum is standing put. However, the Lariat is an exception to that rule, as it has received a $2,330 price increase year-over-year.

If you listened to all the hype ram was supposed to get a new 7.2 cummins it just click bait and internet lies ford still is king of the hill in power . Ford went out on a limb and built the high output motor 1200 ft lb of torque . Cummins can’t come close to it and gm can’t come close it or they would of had ,I drove a 2024 ford and ram both and the ford had the high output and you could really tell the difference in both engines the ford was way more powerful than the ram was and the duramax was more powerful than the ram was I’m going to buy a new truck this year so I guess it going to be ford .
