Bill Ford Doesn’t Rule Out Four-Door Ford Mustang Variant

Ford CEO Jim Farley has been adamant about not only keeping the pony car flame lit, but adding fuel to the flame that is the Ford Mustang brand. While General Motors and Stellantis have either walked away from the muscle car segment outright or fumbled through their next-generation models, the Blue Oval has expanded the Mustang brand and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, a new report indicates that the most prominent member of the Ford family suggests that the company is in fact heavily considering adding a four-door variant to the lineup as well.

Bill Ford spoke to Automotive News at the Detroit Auto Show about what the future holds for the Ford Mustang. The executive chairman emphatically stated that the fabled product will continue under his watch. “Mustang means a lot to me. I’ll never let Mustang go. It will always be part of Ford as long as I’m part of Ford, and so we work very hard to keep it fresh and keep it relevant. We’re just going to keep pushing the envelope on Mustang for as long as we can and there’s really no limit to it,” he said. That statement meshes well with what Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives have said about moving away from “boring” vehicles and keeping the V8 engine alive. Additionally, Farley has previously stated that he wants the Mustang brand to disrupt Porsche globally.

That said, he didn’t rule out an expansion of the Mustang brand, saying “There’s all kinds of possibilities.” “I’m not going to tip where we’re going next, but whatever we do will be true to the brand, because it has to be.”

While production plans for a four-door Ford Mustang variant haven’t been revealed, the company reportedly showed dealers mockups and renderings of one in 2024, along with a four-wheel drive off-road model called the Baja. Beyond totally new configurations, the company recently previewed the RTR, an all-new performance model for the EcoBoost lineup. At the opposite end of the spectrum lies the Mustang GTD, which will hit the road in 2025 with at least one new series: the Spirit of America. Looking ahead, Ford may fill out the Mustang’s roster with performance models that do not utilize the Shelby name, as Ford Authority previously reported. In fact, the non-Shelby model pivot may include a revival of the Boss and even include a Dark Horse Boss.

  • Well, the EV thing was a flop, so we're back to this nonsense again. "For the Boy Racer with a family bun in the oven". Absurd.
How 'bout a new Escape and a Trax competitor? Thought ever occur to you? Didn't think so.

  • It’s been apparent for sometime now that Ford is moving away from the Shelby nomenclature, and why not? They been building “Shelby’s” since 1968! It’s about time that they come out from under Carroll’s apron and taute their own performance models exclusively.

  • Why not build the 4 door on the same platform if you need to, but just call it something else that makes sense? There are plenty of heritage 4 door nameplates to use. Or even come up with a new one?

    • They have already built a very nice four door “Falcon” in the land down under! Why don’t they bring that here?

  • We don't need a four door Mustang, what we need is a Crown Victoria Sedan and Wagon, something for our law enforcement agencies and the public alike, should have been brought out when the new Mustang come out ten years ago, all the missed car sales, these people are so stupid at times, talk about missed opportunities.

  • I think the market is more than ready for a four-door Mustang to replace (what was a great car…Fusion) & get Ford back into sedans. What are they waiting for. With Dodge Charger/Challenger gone, it’s a perfect niche!

  • A four-door Mustang sedan (Mestengo IV? Mustango IV?...definitely, call it something else than Mustang...though all three names mean the same), with a similar roofline to the 1964 Mustang, would be a worthy addition to Ford's 'family' of cars (another idea for a name for a 4-door "Mustang", might be: Ford Familia; Ford La Famille; Ford Famiglia). Definitely, get rid of the existing fastback roofline, and make it a competitive luxury sedan that competes with the best of the best from overseas. Luxury is the key; not racing; not off-roading, but something civilized and aesthetically pleasing...sophisticated...if you will, e.g., Mercedes/Genesis/Jaguar, etc. And while I'm reinventing the Mustang, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Ford develops a 'civilized' Bronco for street and family use. Not for off-roading. Note the Land Rover and Range Rover designs...a civilized, quiet, comfortable and luxurious Bronco, where wheel flares are incorporated and designed into the quarter panels, not "stuck" on, like now.

  • Remember the sh!tstorm when they tried going front-wheel drive (ended up being the Probe)? Same result here, I think. It's kind of like calling that electric SUV the 'Mach E' or making a 4-door Bronco. Those two things should not exist (and I LIKE the Mach E).
If you really need to whore the name out, build a performance AWD hybrid electric CAR that will eat the E-Ray. No Camaros to fight? Go after the 'Vette!
Bad plan, Ford. 4-door Mustang?? I'd rather have a PHEV Maverick and/or a station wagon variant of it. Mustangs are - and always should be - a sporty TWO DOOR meant for fun. If you need more doors, buy an Explorer.

  • If you turn the Mustang into another Thunderbird ; all of you will have a repeat of the 1996 Thunderbird which got so big that it destroyed the basic Thunderbird, and its future !

  • please no........... you already have a 4 door variant and its a ev also , the charger was a messed up version so please leave the mustang alone
