Dark Horse Boss Trademark Filing Hints At New Ford Mustang Model

Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Dark Horse Boss” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Ford Authority has learned.

Filed on January 15th, 2025 under filing number 019131590, this application contains the goods and services description “Motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, sports cars, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”

The Ford Authority Take

This is the second trademark filing concerning the “Boss” name to be filed in January, following the name Boss as a single word, which was filed in the U.S. on January 15th, 2025. The addition of “Dark Horse” for the European filing suggests that The Blue Oval is at least semi seriously considering reviving the Ford Mustang Boss name, potentially as a high-performance variant of the seventh-generation pony car.

As a reminder, the Boss name has been around for quite some time. It made its first appearance with the Boss 302 that famously competed in the Trans Am series before being introduced as a production model in 1969 and 1970. It was followed with the Boss 429, which was a more powerful variant developed for competition on the NASCAR circuit in 1970. The Ford Mustang Boss went dormant for quite a while after that until returning in 2012 as a track-focused variant.

Given that the Ford Mustang Dark Horse is already a track-ready project, it could easily adopt the Boss name. Ford has treated several other Ford Mustang variants in a similar manner in the past with the likes of the Shelby GT350, GT500, and Mach 1 in the past, so don’t count the Boss out quite yet.

Moreover, Ford Authority exclusively reported in May 2024 that the S650 generation Mustang may not utilize the Shelby name at all. Blue Oval enthusiasts seem to take more kindly to names developed entirely by Ford rather than licensed names from third parties – even if that third party is Shelby. Additionally, a new Boss Mustang would be the ultimate tribute to the late Howard Freers, who died last year at 97 years old.
