Donald Trump Randomly Called Bill Ford Last Week

The inauguration of Donald Trump as U.S. President is 10 days away, but over the past several weeks, many have been wondering what sorts of proposed policy changes he will actually enact – many of which are set to impact the automotive industry, specially. Ford stands to be impacted in a number of ways if any of these proposed changes take effect, but CEO Jim Farley recently stated that he isn’t worried about such things, after which the automaker donated $1 million and a fleet of vehicles to Trump’s inauguration ceremony. Now, it seems as if Trump also placed a call to Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford last week, too.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Bill Ford revealed this interesting tidbit during the Detroit Auto Show, noting that following that conversation, he’s confident that the automaker will “have a seat at the table” with the Trump administration. “We had a long, long, conversation,” Ford said. “He called me out of the blue and we had a terrific conversation. And he understands the importance of our industry and Ford in the industry. He wants to be helpful. I think once he gets his staff together, we’ll probably be able to go a little bit deeper.”

Ford added that Trump was new to the automotive industry during his first term as President, but is more knowledgeable this time around. “He’s had a few years to think about the importance of a strong industrial base. His knowledge today is way superior to what it was when he came in the first term.” Ford added that Trump is tuned into Ford’s concerns pertaining to policy change, and that he supports a strong American industry and wants to work to strengthen it further.

Thus far, the Trump administration has been rumored to be considering a number of changes that could impact the automotive industry – including adding tariffs to goods imported not only from China, as is currently the case, but also, Mexico and Canada. Trump also reportedly wants to kill off the existing federal clean energy tax credit – something Ford-backed lobby group the Alliance for Automotive Innovation opposes – as well as potentially cancel the contract between USPS and Oshkosh Defense and roll back fuel efficiency standards.

  4. It would be nice to have an update on the status of the battery replacement for the 2019 Ford Fusion Energi ….. It’s been no communication with Ford owners other than the interim fix with the fuse block last year. It’s quite unbelievable that a prestigious said an established motor company such as Ford would take six years to replace defective battery in their electric hybrid cars. I understand there’s a new type of battery , safer and longer range, partnering with SK On that Ford is intending to produce. Would that be a candidate for the 2019 Ford Fusion Energi? And if so, would that be available early this year or at least by the promised July 2025 replacement date.
    Your feedback would be appreciated.

  5. Reversing existing policies that the industry has already adapted to, isn’t going to help anybody. But when you don’t really understand how a business operates, it’s not surprising Trump make these ill-informed decisions.
