Ford Among Automakers Opting To Sit Out 2025 Super Bowl

There was a time, not too long ago, when the NFL’s Super Bowl was filled with commercials from basically every automaker that sells vehicles in the U.S., and for good reason – we are talking about a game that attracts millions of eyeballs to their TVs each and every year. In fact, in 2024, 123.4 million viewers tuned in to the Super Bowl across all platforms, making it the most-watched telecast in history. However, it’s no secret that Super Bowl ads cost millions of dollars, and as such, automakers like Ford have recently opted out of that once-popular practice.

According to Ad Age, that trend will continue for the 2025 Super Bowl, as Ford is once again among a group of automakers that will sit out the 2025 Super Bowl. It’s being joined by Nissan, General Motors, Hyundai, Audi, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Kia, the latter of which had previously advertised in three straight Super Bowls, sitting out 2021, but it ran ads for 11 years prior to that.

Toyota, Volkswagen, and BMW have also opted to sit this year out after running Super Bowl ads last year, meaning that as of this writing, only Jeep has secured a spot among automotive brands. It’s a stark contrast to just a few years ago, as in 2018, 11 automakers ran Super Bowl ads.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has publicly stated his disdain for Super Bowl ads on many occasions in the past, claiming that the return on investment simply isn’t there. He isn’t alone in that regard, as other automakers – including Ford’s cross-town rival, General Motors, have since followed suit. Ford opted to sit out the Super Bowl back in 2021 and hasn’t advertised during the big game since, and that was also the case last year with The Blue Oval, GM, and Stellantis, though Toyota, BMW, Kia, and Volkswagen all invested heavily in pricey ads for the incredibly popular televised event in 2024.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  3. That event doesn’t draw the eyeballs that it used to. Sooner or later the NFL will wake up. Targeted marketing on specific platforms are where the smart money is going.

  4. You would only go to the Superbowl if you have something to sell. Ford’s got nothing thanks to stupid Farley. His cousin Chris would do a better job at running the company and he’s dead.
