Ford Backed Group Praises Trump EV Order, Pans 2035 ICE Bans

As Ford Authority reported yesterday, newly-minted President Donald Trump quickly opted to reverse many of former President Joe Biden’s EV-related policies after taking office, all with the stroke of a pen via executive order. Trump nullified Biden’s goal of reaching a 50 percent EV sales mix by 2030, and put a halt to distributing unspent funds from vehicle charging stations, while also calling to end an EPA waiver allowing states to adopt stricter emissions rules that California has led the charge on. These moves have received mixed reactions, as one might expect, but are being publicly supported by the Ford-backed lobby group Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI).

“The president is paying close attention to the competitiveness of the American auto industry. And anyone who has been paying attention knows there’s a mismatch between current EV market dynamics and the emissions and EV sales targets called for in recent regulations – especially in the states that adopted California’s gas-powered vehicle ban and EV sales requirements (that are by any measure not achievable),” John Bozzella, president and CEO, Alliance for Automotive Innovation said in a statement.

“There’s a saying in the auto business: you can’t get ahead of the customer,” Bozzella added. “The country should have a single, national standard to reduce carbon in transportation. We can’t have regulations that push the industry too far ahead of the customer. The customer is in charge. More balance between the regulations and the preservation of customer choice is the goal.”

While Ford has long supported California’s right to set its own emissions standards independent from the rest of the U.S., CEO Jim Farley remains skeptical that ICE vehicles will disappear by 2035 as the state is aiming to achieve, too – sentiments echoed by some of his rivals. Despite all of this, AAI has also spoken out against Trump’s plan to kill off the existing federal clean energy tax credit, which it believes is needed to help combat the rise of cheap Chinese EVs.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
