The Ford Authority Take

We consider it a good quarter when Ford Expedition sales outpace those of the GMC Yukon, essentially taking second place in the segment between Tahoe/Suburban and Yukon/Yukon XL. Alas, this was not the case during Q3 2024, as the Expedition range fell behind GMC to place third. This represents a deterioration in the model’s performance, since the Expedition placed second during the past two quarters.

If product is the issue, then Ford has a solution, having recently revealed the updated 2025 Ford Expedition with a new exterior, innovative split liftgate, a new interior with bigger displays and smarter storage solutions, and a new off-road-oriented Tremor model. But Ford isn’t alone in updating the Expedition, as The General has refreshed the 2025 Chevy Tahoe and the 2025 Chevy Suburban duo along with the 2025 GMC Yukon family.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Jeep Wagoneer and Toyota Sequoia are seeing sales grow, with Toyota took aim at The Blue Oval’s flagship utility, with the 2025 Toyota Sequoia 1794 debuting as a new Ford Expedition King Ranch rival.

About Ford Expedition

The 2024 Ford Expedition gains a new exterior color dubbed Wild Green as a no-cost option, while ditching two colors, namely Infinite Blue Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Forged Green Metallic. There’s also a new Excursion Package, which adds floor liners, the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and the Advanced Cargo Manager with black roof rail crossbars, along with suspension/drivetrain upgrades such as ControlTrac with eLSD, a 3.73-geared electronic limited-slip differential, and the Continuous Controlled Damping (CCD) system with suspension road preview.

  1. In a segment with relatively few competitors, anything less than 30% segment share is failure. GM is printing money here. 25 years ago, ord Division VP Ross Roberts and I set and attained a target of 40%. Where has the ambition and pride gone?

  2. What does Gm have that ford doesn’t, Engine options. So if you want diesel you can have it, V8? Have it, give it a 5.0 and it might start fighting back. I would love to have a ford instead of my tahoe to match the f150.
