Ford Mondeo Estate Spotted In Virginia With Regular Plates

The Ford Fusion was discontinued in the U.S. years ago, but the same is also true of its European counterpart – the Ford Mondeo – as production of that model also ended in Europe back in 2022. The Mondeo was sold in Europe for a whopping 29 years, but the last example of Ford’s “world car” rolled off the production line at the Valencia Assembly Plant in Spain on April 4th, marking the true end of an era as consumers in that market moved away from sedans and toward crossovers. However, that only makes this Ford Mondeo wagon sighting in the U.S. all the more interesting.

A Reddit user recently spotted this Ford Mondeo wagon in Virginia with regular old license plates, which is truly an interesting development. It’s unclear how or why this Mondeo wound up in the States, but given Virginia’s close proximity to Washington D.C., perhaps it means that a diplomat or someone in a similar position was able to get it legally registered. Regardless, it’s still quite unusual, and there’s even a Nurburgring decal on the tailgate, which is quite cool as well.

This isn’t the first time we’ve spotted a Ford Mondeo wagon hanging out in the U.S., however, as one was also seen in Arizona back in 2021 – though that example was wearing the tell-tale yellow sticker on the windshield that reveals it’s owned by Ford Motor Company. Regardless, aside from random sightings such as this, the Ford Mondeo lives on only in China, where it’s produced at the joint-venture Ford Changan Assembly Plant. The sedan has received a few updates over the years since its launch in that market, where consumers continue to buy that type of vehicle while much of the rest of the world has moved on to crossovers, SUVs, and pickups.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

  4. Hybrid versions would had sold here very well. It has the space of a small SUV but can handle as well as the sedan. I would had bought one if my dealer offered it instead of the 2014 Fusion Hybrid sedan I drive.

  5. That is a good looking car. I don’t understand why Ford quit making the Fusion. I have a 2011 Fusion and has been an excellent car. Not everybody wants a SUV.

    1. However Ford (and GM, Chrysler) have decided that you really do want a SUV/Truck. I’m sure you just missed the text message they sent out to all potential customers.

  7. The Fusion/Mondeo was and still is an excellent car. It’s a shame Ford stopped making them. I bought a used ’15 SE three weeks ago and love it. Great car!

  9. Great looking wagon. Northern Virginia is filled with world travelers but this isn’t a diplomatic vehicle since those vehicles have special diplomatic plates. The license adds to the intrigue because it starts with “UF.” I had a vehicle in Virginia plated in March ’19 with a “UT….” plate, which means this vehicle was likely plated in 2018. So it has been around for a while.
