Back in 2022, the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E wound up as a top three finalist for World Car of the Year, which is a rather distinctive honor. The Mach-E ultimately didn’t bring home that particular prize, but now, the ICE Ford Mustang has a chance to do precisely the same thing, as it has made the cut as a finalist for 2025 World Car of the Year. WCOTY jurors recently whittled down their list of 52 eligible vehicles to just 10, and the popular pony car is among that group, in fact.
The Ford Mustang will be battling the Audi A5/S5, BMW X3, Hyundai Inster/Casper Electric, Kia EV3, Mini Cooper Electric, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Camry, Toyota Land Cruiser/Land Cruiser 250, and Volkswagen Tiguan/Tayron for 2025 World Car of the Year honors. Over the past two-plus decades, the WCOTY awards have sought to identify the very best vehicles on sale across the entire globe, and this time around, that task falls in the hands of 96 journalists who test drive and evaluate new or fully redesigned vehicles that are on sale in multiple markets or more than one continent.
The 2025 World Car of the Year award winners will be announced on April 16th, 2025 at the New York International Auto Show. “The World Car Awards align perfectly with the core values and innovative spirit of Brembo, which is why I would like to congratulate the first finalists of this prestigious accolade,” said Daniele Schillaci, Brembo’s Chief Executive Office. “Your achievement is evidence of the same forward-thinking vision that motivates us every day. We look forward to the winner’s announcement and wish all participants continued success in their endeavors.”
“As we celebrate 125 years of the New York Auto Show this year, we’re pleased to once again kick off the Show by also celebrating the winners of the World Car Awards,” added Mark Schienberg, president of NYIAS. “Receiving a World Car Award from 96 of the world’s top automotive journalists is a major victory for all those involved and is a perfect way to open North America’s first and largest-attended auto show. Congratulations to the World Car team on more than 20 years of excellence, and best of luck to all the finalists!”

Looking over the other selectees, it would interesting to know what their criteria is, since the selected vehicles seem to be a variety of categories?
