Ford Pickup Sales Up Healthy 11 Percent During Q3 2024

Ford pickup sales, which includes the Ford Maverick , Ford Ranger, and Ford F-Series, grew 11 percent to 245,816 units during the third quarter of 2024 in the United States.

Sales of the F-Series (see running Ford F-Series sales) increased two percent to 191,267 units; these includes the F-150 light duty and Super Duty heavy duty truck lines. The popular Maverick compact pickup (see running Ford Maverick sales) saw sales grow 33 percent to 31,883 units, outselling the larger Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) midsize pickup, which saw sales grow 110 percent to 15,504 deliveries. The all-electric F-150 Lighting (see running Ford F-150 Lightning sales) full-size pickup brought up the rear, with a 104 percent jump to 7,162 deliveries.

Not surprisingly, the F-Series accounted for a vast majority of Ford truck sales last quarter, representing 84 percent of pickup sales. The Maverick accounted for 11 percent, the Ranger made up three percent, and the F-150 Lightning had two percent.

The Ford Authority Take

Once again, Ford pickup sales accounted for nearly a quarter million units during Q3 2024. Every single model was in the green, with two models – the Ranger and F-150 Lightning – posting notable increases over over 100 percent.

Now that the next-generation Ford Ranger, which debuted for the 2024 model year, has begun to appear on lots en masse, its sales are beginning to reflect that. Meanwhile, Q3 F-150 Lightning sales increased 104 percent, though it’s worth noting that The Blue Oval recently paused F-150 Lightning production at the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center from November into the new year amid slower-than-expected demand. In fact, things have cooled so much for the all-electric pickup that the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning program will now pay dealers to use Retail Replenishment Centers (RRC) to help move inventory.

Sales of the Ford Maverick were also quite healthy last quarter. And while sales of the Ford F-Series pickups (this total doesn’t include the F-150 Lightning) only increased two percent, the ever-popular truck family still dominated its competitive set while accounting for most Ford truck sales last quarter.

About Ford F-150

In September 2023, the refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 debuted featuring a new Pro Access Tailgate and standard EcoBoost. The range-topping Limited has now been replaced by the Platinum Plus, while the STX becomes its own trim level rather than an optional package, and each model receives its own unique styling updates and interior themes.

The full 2024 F-150 trim level lineup, then, includes the base model XL along with STX, XLT, Lariat, and King Ranch, plus Platinum and the new range-topping Platinum Plus, joined by the off-road-focused Tremor and Raptor/Raptor R.

Powertrain-wise, the previously standard 3.3L V6 is gone, replaced by the turbocharged Ford 2.7L V6 EcoBoost across the lineup. In an effort to boost sales, the 3.5L V6 PowerBoost hybrid is now a no-cost option over the standard, twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 EcoBoost, as well.

About Ford Super Duty

In September 2022, the refreshed 2023 Ford Super Duty debuted featuring a new V8 and Pro Power Onboard along with fresh interior and exterior styling.

The 2024 Ford Super Duty arrives with a few small changes. One notable update is that 2024 Super Duty XL and XLT trim levels get Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch features. For 2023, the option was only available on the Lariat trim and up.

About Ford Ranger

In May 2023, the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger debuted with all-new tech and a 2.7L V6 EcoBoost. The carryover turbocharged Ford 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost gasoline engine produces 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, while the new, optional twin-turbocharged Ford 2.7L V6 EcoBoost generates 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Both are mated exclusively to the Ford 10-speed automatic transmission, giving the new Ranger a payload capacity of up to 1,805 pounds and a max towing limit of 7,500 pounds.

The 2024 Ranger also debuts the high-performance Ranger Raptor, powered by the twin-turbocharged Ford 3.0L V6 EcoBoost, which will be sold in the U.S. for the very first time after existing in international markets for years now. The engine is rated at 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel, sending power to the wheels via Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, an electronically-controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case, and front- and rear-locking differentials.

That means the 2024 Ford Ranger line-up is offered in XL, XLT, Lariat, and Raptor trim levels.

In addition to new styling inside and out along with a handful of other major changes, the 2024 Ranger nearly matches the EPA fuel economy ratings of its predecessor, as Ford Authority reported.

About Ford Maverick

The 2024 Ford Maverick receives several changes and updates compared to its prior model year. The compact pickup dropped the 2.5L I4 hybrid engine as its standard engine option in favor of the 2.0L EcoBoost I4 gasoline powerplant. The Lariat trim was subject to notable changes too, gaining quite a few standard packages and features that were previously optional, while the off-road-focused Tremor replaced its optional appearance package with standard decals.

The 2024 Maverick also lost the factory SecuriCode keypad across the board, along with the manual sliding rear window and the windshield wiper deicer. Meanwhile, it ditches four exterior colors, but gains two new onesHere’s a guide to every 2024 Ford Maverick wheel.

The refreshed 2025 Ford Maverick officially debuted with Ford Sync 4, hybrid all-wheel drive, and an updated design, along with the first-ever 2025 Maverick Lobo as an all-new performance pickup. Interestingly, the Maverick Lobo uses the Ford Edge ST’s 7-speed transmission.

Furthermore, the 2025 Maverick Tremor gets upgraded to pickup’s top trim rather than as an optional upgrade package.

The 2025 Maverick drops four exterior colors and ditches front-wheel drive on the EcoBoost, with the turbocharged engine now only available with all-wheel drive. Notably, the 2025 Maverick EcoBoost is much cheaper than Ford Escape and Ford Bronco Sport 2.0L models, but down 12 horsepower thanks to the addition of a new gas particulate filter to meet emissions requirements.

About Ford F-150 Lightning

For 2024, the Ford F-150 Lightning lost two configurations while it added a new Flash trim level, sitting above the XLT trim, as an option that bundles tech upgrades and the extended range battery at a more reasonable price. On the other end of the spectrum, The Blue Oval debuted the Platinum Black trim, with the F-150 Lightning being the first production Ford truck to feature a matte wrap.

The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning gains ActiveX seating for the Lariat trim, and the entire 2024 lineup gets a heat pump as standard, while dropping Active Park Assist 2.0.
