Ford Rival Kia Delays Tesla Supercharger Access By Several Months

Ford was the first automaker to sign a deal with Tesla granting Blue Oval EV owners access to the latter’s expansive Supercharger network, and since then, users have been able to charge their vehicles in that manner by using a special adapter. After Ford’s move, most every other automaker that sells EVs in the U.S. has followed suit, though only a handful have gained access to the Tesla Supercharger network as of this writing. Kia owners were originally supposed to gain that access today, but now, it’s been pushed back by what could be weeks or even several months.

According to PC Mag, Kia EV owners now won’t be able to access the Tesla Supercharger network until some point in Q1 2025, which was recently changed from “Spring 2025” in the brand’s original release announcing this news. “A delay has occurred and we are working with the appropriate teams to confirm new availability/date,” James Bell, Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations at Kia, confirmed in an email, though the company hasn’t provided any additional information pertaining to this delay.

Kia began offering free CCS to NACS adapters last year to support this effort, at least, to EV6 and EV9 owners that took delivery of a new 2024 or 2025 version of those models from September 4th, 2024 onward, who will get that part free of charge. Those that already own an EV6, EV9, or Niro EV or took delivery prior to that date will have to purchase the adapter from a Kia dealer at a later date. Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis have begun switching to native NACS ports in EVs already, a bit quicker than the competition – including Ford.

Meanwhile, Ford has been shipping out its own NACS adapters for some time now, but experienced some issues with an early batch that will be replaced by new, more robust units. Those adapters were provided to Ford EV owners for free early on, but can still be purchased by those that didn’t get one within that window.
